Check for Ministry of Tourism Recognition
The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India maintains a list of approved travel agents. Ask your agency for their MoT approval number and verify it at incredibleindia.org. Approved agencies must meet minimum standards for service quality and financial stability.
Verify IATA or TAAI Membership
IATA (International Air Transport Association) accreditation and TAAI (Travel Agents Association of India) membership are signs of a legitimate, established agency. Not all good agencies have these, but their presence is a strong positive signal.
Check GST Registration
Every legitimate travel agency must be GST registered if their annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs. Ask for their GSTIN number and verify it at gst.gov.in. An agency without a valid GSTIN is operating outside the law — walk away.
Read Google Reviews — Not Just Star Ratings
A 4.8-star rating means nothing if it's based on 6 reviews. Look for agencies with 50+ Google reviews and read through the negative ones carefully. How did the agency respond to complaints? Recent reviews (last 6 months) are the most relevant.
Ask for a Detailed Written Itinerary
Any serious agency will provide a written itinerary before you pay anything. It should include: exact hotel names and star ratings, all meals included, transport type (AC/non-AC), guide details, entrance fees included or excluded, and a day-by-day breakdown. Vague itineraries = vague service.
Verify the Physical Office Address
Search the agency's address on Google Maps. Do they have a real office with photos? Can you call a landline number (not just mobile)? WhatsApp-only agencies with no physical presence are a major red flag, especially for high-value bookings.
Understand the Cancellation & Refund Policy
Before paying any advance, get the cancellation policy in writing. What percentage is refundable if you cancel 30 days before? 15 days? 7 days? A legitimate agency has a clear, written policy. "We'll see what we can do" is not a policy.
Never Pay 100% Upfront
Standard practice is 25–30% advance with the balance due 7–15 days before travel. Any agency demanding full payment upfront for a trip that's months away should be treated with extreme caution — especially if you haven't used them before.
Ask for References from Past Customers
Good agencies are proud of their work and happy to connect you with past travellers who've done the same route. If an agency refuses or deflects this request, it tells you something important about their confidence in their own service.

- Prices far below market rate — If a 7-night Rajasthan package is being offered at ₹5,000/person when all other agencies quote ₹20,000+, something is wrong. Either the hotels are terrible, the service won't materialise, or it's a scam.
- Pressure to pay immediately — "This price is only valid for today" or "We have only 2 slots left" are classic high-pressure sales tactics. Legitimate agencies give you time to decide.
- No written itinerary — If an agency won't put the details in writing before you pay, they won't be accountable after you pay.
- Requests payment via UPI to a personal account — Genuine agencies accept payment into company accounts and issue proper GST invoices. Personal UPI payments with no receipt = no recourse.
- New social media page, few or no reviews — Anyone can create an Instagram page and start taking bookings. No review history means no track record.
- No clear cancellation policy — If they're vague about refunds before you pay, imagine how vague they'll be when you actually need one.
